Finally getting a day off here and there to catch up with life (although not quite the break I was hoping for, since my volunteer coordinator resigned so taking over a lot of her duties and starting the hiring process all over again, hurrrg). The usual story - found out in the woods by a visitor, there are no nearby homes for miles, so most likely dumped, not a stray. She'll hang out in my office until I can get her a home or an appointment with the local rescue.

I've been experimenting at work with keeping a colony of zooplankton going, so I was dismayed when I checked today and almost all of them were gone. And then I looked a little closer and saw why: I must have introduced some hydra into the tank along with that last batch of pond water, and there were about two dozen little blobby dudes capturing ( Read more... )

I was starting to think I'd made a terrible mistake in deciding to overwinter the yellow-bellied slider in my backyard pond - I thought she'd be happier there than in a dinky tank in my basement, but if I'd known we were going to have one of the coldest, longest winters in decades I might have reconsidered.
